A-2 ROUGHWEAR JACKET | Seal Brown

Rough Wear Clothing Co. was one of five contractors to supply the U.S. Army Air Corps with the A-2 flight jacket, and this reproduction follows their third delivery from 1942 - the point at which the Air Corps began requiring the "Property Air Force" designation, sewn in as the now-distinctive two-piece label. Rough Wear's own signature shows in the jacket's large, stood collar.

The leather is Italian, vegetable-tanned slowly in a tannin bath drawn from tree bark, then hand-rubbed with an aniline dye in seal brown. Aniline dyeing leaves the colour more transparent than a lacquer finish would, so the leather keeps developing depth and character as it's worn - eventually taking on a glossy, one-of-a-kind patina. This version leaves off the painted stencil artwork some A-2s carry, for a plainer, quieter jacket.
