Most Celebrated MoonStar Shoes Designs

MoonStar is best known for its Shoes Like Pottery line. This remarkable series is made with a special technique, ka-Ryu, or vulcanising, performed by only a handful of manufacturers in the world. Ka-Ryu is a process of burning a shoe in a kiln, just like pottery would be, utilizing advanced technology to ensure a chemical reaction that brings raw rubber to its original elasticity, softness and flexibility.

MoonStar Alweather sneakers combine simplistic design with functionality. In addition to MoonStar Gym Classic sneaker available through the HANSEN collection, we also carry the eye-catching Alweather sneaker; a hi-top sneaker that combines all, design, quality and comfort.

Each pair is handmade by highly skilled craftspeople. The canvas upper layer of the MoonStar sneaker is attached to the rubber sole by hand, due to a procedure that’s impossible mechanically. Then, the shoes are baked for 70 minutes in a kiln in the vulcanisation process. What you get at the end are long-lasting strong and durable footwear that are initially a compromise between design and quality.

Frequently asked questions about MoonStar

How did MoonStar produce their traditional canvas shoes and rain boots?

With its rich history, MoonStar actually started as a socks production company. The brand was founded in the city of Kurume back in 1873. It has also been one of the first companies to bring sewing machines into the shoemaking industry and the Country of the Rising Sun itself.

Once they started the production of canvas shoes, back in 1920 just with a basic method of glueing sole to fabric, the evolution of MoonStar shoes could no longer be dilatory. Until 1925 the production went through a focused and narrowing procedure and they upgraded their technology. Since then, MoonStar started to produce their most popular and to this day most celebrated line of athletic shoes in a form of its traditional design with laces. Ever since the size of the company grew rapidly.

On top of that, MoonStar started production of what we nowadays know as their all-weather outwear, and their first rubber boots were born, so commonly purchased today as rain boots that never fail. They produce in wide color range from black to white.

What are the biggest achievements that make MoonStar's long history so rich?

Back in 1958, mainly thanks to its quality shoemaking, this has been one of a few brands that made their mark on Polar exploration. Their footwear made their way down to the south pole, as part of equipment or clothing for the Antarctica observation team.

This achievement has been reached mainly due to the nature of natural rubber MoonStar added into their shoe soles as well as a specific technique in which they alter it. It leaves the material with remarkable characteristics so desirable in the extreme conditions of Antarctica.

How is the MoonStar sizing?

MoonStar puts effort into being available for everyone that appreciates great style and searches for great quality. Therefore, to make things easier when it comes to product purchase, MoonStar offers UNISEX sizing of all of their shoes. No matter the customer, you can always find the right fit for yourself without the tiresome search.

Not only are they true in size, but MoonStar has shoes that are also designed to give enough space for your toe, while at the same time cling to your feet for more comfortable wear.

What is the ka-Ryu method that MoonStar in Kurume Japan uses to craft their shoes?

One of many things making MoonStar shoes so reliable and popular is their unique craftsmanship including the traditional method of ka-Ryu. This exquisite technique is a process that ensures the unique characteristics of each shoe sole.

The raw rubber is being baked in a kiln at 120 degrees for 70 minutes. In the process of vulcanisation, the raw material is mixed with white sulfur, turning it into stronger and more flexible material. In the finishing touches, the highest quality fabric is attached to the soles and the shoes are given a special treatment that gives them a unique texture. The proceeding is finalised with the method of ka-Ryu.
