Based in the historic New York City garment district and hand made by sewers and tailors on non-automatic machines, Kai D Utility was created by talented Kai D in 2009, after years of learning about the industry as a Creative Director of the Nautica brand.
His background transformed into a level of craftsmanship weaved between everything Kai D produces.
Now, he produces menswear for a new generation of Artisans. His vision for every garment is for it to be beautifully crafted, built to last, and for it to live organically with those who wear it. He envisages his clothing as ‘vintage to be.’

Kai D Utility transforming the world of fashion
The philosophy of slow fashion is something that runs through all of Kai D clothes. These items are made to last, even to future generations. By using traditional methods, we can go back to the times when clothes, and the resources they’re made from, were given the respect they deserve.

Kai D Utility transforming the world of fashion
The philosophy of slow fashion is something that runs through all of Kai D clothes. These items are made to last, even to future generations. By using traditional methods, we can go back to the times when clothes, and the resources they’re made from, were given the respect they deserve.
An artisan is someone who practices their craft to produce something in limited quantities. Usually, this also means using traditional methods which are not mechanised. Instead, each piece is individual and embedded with the personality of its maker.
This definition is something that Kai D keeps in mind when creating their pieces. Not only is this the style the brand is going for - that timeless edge that exists far away from a modern-day production line - but it’s how they create their garments too.
Kai D menswear clothing at HANSEN
HANSEN shares with Kai D a view of fashion as an investment, pieces of your life which you should take along with you. Their approach to slow fashion and unusual garments was just some of the reasons why we knew we needed to bring this brand to Scandinavia.
Starting with the collection of traditional farmer's jackets. These are absolutely perfect for the Scandinavian weather we all know and, well, somehow still love.
The Double Layer Japanese Farmer Coat in black and dark brown-green are top choices for the transitional period to autumn or spring. These garments are made of novel sashiko stitch cotton, a material that is resistant to changing weather. The length, weight and colour of the garment are suitable for the casual minimalistic Nordic style and will keep you warm and comfortable.
This different sort of cotton makes for an extremely soft garment, especially for structured outerwear. Moreover, thanks to the unique design, both these garments are reversible and so can be worn in different styles even throughout the day.
Let's talk about Kai D workwear
If you enjoy workwear pieces, Degas Jacket made of patch weave organic cotton is another of the items we stock from Kai D. This garment is dyed super deep indigo, only with a light wash. With its patchwork design and four inside pockets, it makes for a unique and elegant work garment that you will get a ton of use out of.
With attention to detail, pieces of vintage African mud cloth lie under the collar. This is a beautiful material, one of those hidden gems you can reveal on colder days with the collar cocked up. A floral patchwork material also lines the sleeves of the garment which is visible if you roll them up slightly.
Another amazing garment for work is their Ashbury Kimono Jacket in faded brown. Made of cotton-wool blend fabric, collar in a soft wool-cashmere blend and four front pockets, this jacket is not only comfortable but practical and elegant at the same time. It is the greatest experience you can get for cooler Nordic days when you will get a ton of use of it.
Experience these great kimonos from Kai D
Another amazing garment from Kai D is their Muralist Kimono Jacket made of Japanese linen. The first style is indigo-dyed and features denim from the 1930s and Italian linen plaid. It is a piece of history distilled into one garment.
The other Muralist Kimono Jacket in our collection is made from heavy brown linen. Made of texture weave double gauze linen, trimmed with Italian linen plaid and ticking stripe indigo, this kimono is a perfect choice as an elegant overshirt for formal events.
Each kimono is unique, only one made with each combination of fabrics. They are sold pretty quickly thanks to their lightweight materials, handmade weave and classic design. Stop by our shops to try these garments out.

Frequently asked questions about Kai D
What is Kai D sizing like?
The sizing depends on which garment you wish to try. Due to their nature, these items have little tailoring around the body making them flexible and comfortable to wear all day long.
For the kimonos, the medium size can fit people who would usually wear an M, L, and XL, solely depending on whether you're looking for a more oversized fit or tailored to your shape.
The best thing you can do is stop by our stores in Copenhagen and we'd be more than happy to help you pick the best size and style.
Is Kai D making clothes for her?
Kai D creates clothes for both men and women. The women’s range includes items such as woollen dresses and trench coats, plaid jackets, linen jumpsuits, and trousers made from linen wool blends.
Many of the items are inspired by menswear and of course, many of their menswear items are suitable for women as well. Have a look at the edited selection we have here at HANSEN.
Where is the wool from which Kai D uses for his items?
The wool and cashmere used in items come from Lanificio F.lli Bacci, a textile mill just outside of Florence.
This mill has been in the Bacci family for five generations and has outlasted the time. Each of the fabrics and threads is studied with human eyes and hands as they are being made to ensure the quality of the fabrics the mill produces.
This attention to detail is obvious when you feel the Kai D clothing and accessories. The quality is unrivalled and has that old-timey feel of items that are made to last.
Where is the cotton twill from which Kai D uses for his items?
The cotton twill is from the Sondrio province of Northern Italy. Again, this material comes from a mill that has been in operation for over a century. This cotton twill is truly unique to the area in Italy it is from.
The mill’s beautiful location has something to do with the high quality of goods that come out of it. The groundwater is so clean that it doesn’t need to be processed before it is used to create the cotton twill. That means that no extra chemicals need to be added to the production process. It is all as natural as possible.
