HANSEN Garments AUTUMN/WINTER '24
PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
Workwear in its many forms has always been central to HANSEN - from farm hands and railway workers to fishermen and even bookeepers, the way we dress as we do our everyday business brings together functionality, durability, comfort and, in many cases, a truly authentic style. For AW24, HANSEN explores the many facets of utility clothing but twists it into something contemporary by reworking the silhouette and using modern interpretations of traditional fabrics.
Shapes are loose and easy to wear with long lengths mixed with shorter and wider to create unexpected proportions. In a push to stay true to season (October is more summer than winter these days), traditional fabrics - flannel, corduroy, tweed - are made lighter and softer by using cotton instead of wool. The palette mixes urban greys, washed blacks and chalk whites with more natural tones of olive, raisin and sage whilst highlights include a rich magenta and a floral jacquard in forest tones.
Tailoring - the mainstay of urban office workers - is, in true HANSEN style, deconstructed and relaxed. Elephant corduroy has a vintage look whilst cotton suiting modernises bankers’ pinstripes into something totally contemporary. Elsewhere a checked tweed blazer is reworked in cotton for a striking yet easy piece to layer, unexpectedly, over a long-line shirt or waffle knit Henley. Trousers play with proportions by being either very baggy, highwaisted or even padded.
Outerwear has uniform details - most apparent in a cropped jacket with epaulettes but also in a waxed cotton gamekeeper’s jacket that is cut wide and has an oversized pocket on the back. Padded nylon parkas are more minimal, allowing the silhouette to take centre stage. Finally, a group of knitted sweaters and cardigans look rugged but have a cosy soft handle that makes then totally modern - after all, workwear doesn’t need to be hard work...
Short Cuts
Good outerwear is key for the Autumn/Winter season but it’s not all about a long coat: if you are cycling or in a car, something shorter is often the most practical and comfortable. Our new DEXTER jacket is the perfect solution: an abbreviated zip up blouson in water resistant, very compact Scottish cotton with a waxed finish. And there are multiple options when it comes to carrying all your stuff too: flap pockets on the front, two on the inside and a feature extra large one on the back (could replace the need for a back-pack if you are on your bike!). A final cool finishing touch - the jacket has a printed camo lining.
Another alternative is SANDER, a short jacket in soft but very dense black wool. Inspired by uniforms, it has a more dressed up feel with military pockets at the chest and epaulettes at the shoulders. The waistband is extended to cross over and button, creating a strong silhouette and a confident attitude.
Who Needs a Collar?
On your days off (or even at the workplace if you don’t have strict dress rules), it’s good to escape the collared shirt and go for something a little more relaxed. The LEVI pull-on shirt is based on those worn by farm workers with just a band collar and extra long length (so it didn’t become untucked when bending over in the fields). Made from soft washed cotton twill from Italy, it has fabric covered buttons to add to the workwear vibe.
Even more casual is the HERMANN henley shirt. Made from textured cotton jersey in a waffle construction, it’s reminiscent of army surplus underwear but elevated in quality so it is totally appropriate as a piece in its own right. Also collarless, it can be layered under a shirt or worn under a blazer for a more laid-back attitude.
Dadcore is Cool
Cardigans are far too good to be just worn by your uncle! A surprisingly versatile garment, they can, of course, be the go-to for a chilly evening by the fire (and who doesn’t love that cosy feeling?) but also a stylish alternative to a casual jacket.
Take our LINUS version in fuzzy soft merino wool for example. It’s elegant enough to wear over a shirt (and even tie!) at the office or you can buy one size up and layer over a t-shirt for a slouchy, totally cool vibe.
Soft Touch
The world might be getting warmer but it doesn’t always feel that way on a December morning so we all still need cold weather clothes. But that doesn’t have to be at the expense of a bit of style. This season we have a group of very cool (by which we mean very warm) pieces that are all lightly padded to give an interesting structural shape but also keeps the wearer nice and cosy.
The HAUK vest has minimal details - a wrap over front and large patch pockets - so can be worn easily under an overcoat whilst ANDY pants are voluminous and sculptural with an elasticated waist and full leg shape. Both have a bit of a samurai vibe which might be useful at getting people out of your way on the morning commute…
Looking Good in Bad Weather
Being a Scandinavian brand, HANSEN knows the importance of looking good when the weather turns really cold so we offer a
wide range of practical but very stylish outerwear that will get you admiring glances on the gloomiest days. Our RASMUS parka is a perennial favourite, known for its weather-beating fabric, oversized hood and warm wool lining but this season it comes in a very chic off-white shade. You might not be going on a polar mission this winter but you can stand out in a sea of black outerwear with this one (just remember to be careful with that coffee-to-go…)
For the ultimate in sophistication though, look at the VILLUM overcoat. A fashionable take on a traditional Saville Row crombie coat, it is a stylish double-breasted classic in premium 100% wool with a soft, felted finish that works either dressed up over a suit or thrown over a sweater and chinos for a understated elegant look. The cream satin lining is, of course, the final word in whispered luxury.
