JONNY THE GLOBETROTTER

No matter what time dictates, we’ve always been taken with ’50s styling. Thanks to the likes of Elvis, James Dean, and Marlon Brando, ’50s style clothing has achieved icon status, including our very own favourite item - the short-sleeved shirt.

Over the course of the past decade, we’ve paid homage to Elvis, James, and Marlon with our JONNY short-sleeved shirt. This piece always appears in our collections, each time reinvented through different fabrics, patterns and colours.

The JONNY shirt is the first thing in the suitcase when heading off on our travels. It’s brilliant for keeping your luggage light and for looking effortlessly stylish, wherever you are.

As we would love to write about how great it is to travel the world with this piece, but can’t for the time being, we will instead bring the world to you with these images collected on our travels over the years, keeping us inspired to continue making the JONNY shirt.

Enjoy and join us in feeling taken away with ‘50s styling.

ONE SHIRT - MANY FACES

JONNY is one of our oldest travelling companions. He accompanied us on each of our adventures to inspire us and to give birth to it's next generation.

During our trip in India, we come across craftsmen, workers, and interesting locals with different stories and backgrounds. Just like the people wearing it, this shirt has many different faces. It melts into the identity of the owner yet has its own iconic style.

JONNY IN OUR HOMETOWN

We produce our JONNY shirts in many other colours too, such as this artichoke piece. The fabric is handwoven with Indian lungi cotton and then made into a garment here in the EU.

These pictures weren’t taken so far from home. We couldn’t help but ask some of HANSEN’s close friends in Denmark to model the JONNY shirt for us. It’s inspiring to see how different the shirt looks on each of our friends. The photographs are a testament to the stylistic versatility of this piece.

TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

The 100% cotton we use for our Artichoke JONNY shirts is handwoven at a small weavers’ corporation in India. It was a pleasure for us to visit, to meet the very people who have a hand in making our garments.

The corporation uses shuttle looms to weave with. This is a traditional method of weaving where the cotton is threaded up into a large wooden structure and the shuttle - a piece of wood with a bobbin inside - is passed backwards and forwards across the yarns. It’s one of the oldest techniques in the book and the quality of the weave is unrivalled.

JONNY IN MAURITIUS

Some of our JONNY shirt designs have decorative stitching on the collar and breast pocket - a detail which references the ‘50s styling elegantly. The collar is also convertible meaning you have the freedom to wear the piece however you want to.

Here, our JONNY shirt in the colour eucalyptus can be seen modelled by some local fishermen we met in Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island off the south-east coast of Africa. The shirt was perfect for the mild tropical climate Mauritius enjoys throughout the year.

JONNY SAYS ALOHA

We’ve referenced other iconic styles too, such as the aloha shirt. Our piece is emblazoned with a green flowered print, a subtle nod to the Hawaiian hibiscus pattern. The JONNY shirt is also made from Japanese fabric, just like traditional aloha shirts.

The seersucker material is washed, making it softer to the touch. Again, this is a lightweight but comfortable garment.

MOTHER OF PEARLS

Here is our 100% Italian dyed cotton JONNY shirt, styled with some other travelling necessities. It’s picture matching the deep blue of the sea in Seychelles. The mother of pearl buttons make so much sense in this environment.

ITALIAN HERRINGBONE COTTON

And, as we said, we bring back our JONNY shirt season after season. This only proves that the best designs stay with us for a lifetime.

This Kalahari design is made from 100% Italian cotton and is from our most recent collection. The cotton is weaved in such a way that the material has a striped herringbone effect. It has a regular fit - simple, but stylish.

INSPIRATION FROM OUR TRAVELS

Inspiration comes from many places, and travelling was always one of our main sources. We look out for the most intricate, beautiful details in nature, like the texture of the stones or the colour of a plant we’ve never seen before can give birth to a new idea. These JONNY shirts got their texture from the Khakiplant.

JApanese dobby

We could not rest until our collection was complete with Japanese influence on our beloved garment.

This complex Dobby fabric is made in Japan and has a handful of different stripes due to the weaving method. Dobby Weave is a collection of small designs that requires 25 different warp arrangements to complete one design repeat. The result? Beautiful textured fabric that is both sturdy and soft.

It’s incredible to think of the process behind each of the pieces we make here at HANSEN Garments. Our ideas start out locked up in our heads, liberated by our first, simplistic preparatory sketches. Once we’ve sourced the best quality materials from around the world to make the pieces, we put our designs in the hands of trusted craftsmen.

Because we are a slow fashion brand, it couldn’t be more important for us to appreciate every step in this process. Clothes don’t come easy - there’s a huge journey they undertake before they end up in our Pilestræde shop front. We thank every person who has a hand in creating our clothing.

By the time you own our pieces, they may have already been on a long journey. But, the new journey is just beginning for you. We can’t wait to hear about the places you take your JONNY shirt.
