Here at HANSEN, we stock both our own designs of beanie as well as another brand. This is heritage Irish knitwear company Inis Meáin. Each of the knit beanies are made from 100% wool, making them soft and durable. Most of the designs also use a 1x1 rib stitch, meaning little air can get between the woolen fibres as they are tightly bound. Choose from our collection of high-quality, comfortable headgear.

The knit beanies stocked at HANSEN
We stock a range of styles here at HANSEN, both our own collection and those from other brands. To begin, we have the TORE knitted beanie. This is one of the HANSEN Garments styles made from 100% Italian merino wool which is spun in Italy too. The knit stitch used is the 1x1 rib stitch which means there’s added elasticity in the fabric, making it completely comfortable to wear. The wool itself is soft and lightweight, exactly what you need out of wool beanie for the winter months. It’s up to you how you want to wear this hat. You can either wear it as a thin, slouchy beanie, or roll it up once or twice, transforming it into the fisherman beanie mini style. You can buy this fisherman beanie in black, oak, or navy. Also from HANSEN Garments is the Tore block colour beanie. Again, this style is knitted with the 1x1 rib stitch though using 100% extra fine merino wool of Italian origin. The wool used for this piece is of the highest quality and softest merino wool. For this style, we produce it in three different colour ways. We have black and pinetree, blue and black, plus pinetree and blue. The fold is where the colour contrast is placed. This adds that extra bit of detail to the piece, a flair of personality.
We also stock a number of styles by Inis Meáin, the Irish knitwear company. Inis Meáin is located on one of the Aran islands which has the same name. Islanders have been knitting garments to keep warm for generations. In 1976, Tarlach de Blácam and Áine Ní Chonghaile decided to open up this tradition to the rest of the world. Now, they have enough machinery to produce up to 50 different styles for each season. They produce everything from their typical, Aran jumpers, to knitted hats and scarves. In a similar style to the HANSEN Garments styles, we stock the Inis Meáin rib hat in colours raven and tegola. Again, they are made from 100% merino wool in Ireland. You can choose whether you want to roll the hat up or wear it more casually. This is a true mens fisherman beanie as the island is rich in tradition of creating garments for locals who took to the sea. We also stock two of their Bas hats, knitted pieces made from 80% baby alpaca wool and 20% silk. We have both their charcoal colour way and the multicoloured style wool cap. This is a different mens winter hat style altogether, with a billowing shape. This means that it almost takes on the look of a mens slouchy beanie, though has more structure than that. It is a statement piece of knitwear from the artisans at Inis Meáin.Each of their pieces is made on state of the art machinery but is finished by hand to give them their personal touch. The specialised, highly-educated workforce helps the pieces be of the highest quality possible.
Frequently asked questions about knit beanies
How to take care of wool knit beanies?
As beanies are smaller items, it’s best to wash them by hand. Thanks to their size, this is not difficult to do. When washing wool, you should use lukewarm water. This is when the water is just warm to the touch. Anything hotter than this may shrink the fabric. FIll the sink with water of this temperature deep enough that the hat can be fully submerged. Next, put some mild detergent into the water. You only need about 1 teaspoon of detergent per gallon of water so make sure you control how much you put in. Mix the water and soap together using your hand. Now, it’s time to submerge the beanie. Drop it in the water and swirl it around for 2 to 5 minutes. Make sure not to stretch or pull at the water whilst it’s wet as this might change the shape of the item. If you want, you can squeeze the hat inwards so that it absorbs more water, giving a more intense wash. After that, you need to rinse the beanie with clean, cool water so that the soap suds are washed out. Again, squeeze the hat inwards so that more water passes through the fibres, always making sure to be careful. Keep going with this process until all the soap suds have gone. Then, take the beanie hat out of the water and making it into a ball. Press it against a hard surface to get rid of the water. Don’t wring it out as this will change the shape of the beanie. You can also get rid of excess water by placing it on a towel and slowly rolling it up into it. When you leave it to dry, find a well-ventilated space which is out of direct sunlight. A mesh drying rack is the best place so that it can have lots of air around it but not pull itself out of shape.
What is the sizing of the beanies we stock here?
The sizing differs a lot from brand to brand so it’s important to try the mens hats on before you buy them. As always, this is possible at our shop front located on Pilestræde. Each of the styles only have one size, meaning that it is important to see how they fit on you. Like we mentioned before, it’s possible to wear the beanies in multiple different ways which might alter the way they sit and fit. It’s a good idea to experiment with different ways of wearing them.
What other beanie styles are popular?
Another popular style of beanie which we don’t stock here at HANSEN is the cable knit beanie. This uses a style of stitch that appears like a chain on top of a knitted piece of material. It is a traditional sort of stitch which originated in the Aran Islands, one of which is Inis Meáin. Because of the tightly wound shapes, it is a very warm stitch and doesn’t let much of the outside air permeate through. This makes it a great choice for a fisherman beanie mens. The wool watch cap is also very similar to knit beanie mens. This is the name of the woolen hat which was originally called Tuques and is of French-Canadian origin. Some other brands are particularly popular, such as the Carhartt fisherman beanie, Neff fisherman beanie and North Face beanie.
